چکیده

Forest stand boundaries are usually represented on vegetation maps as fine lines all having the same width. Thus spatial accuracy and precision are considered to be uniform over an entire map. However, real forest boundaries — i.e., those that can be observed on the ground— differ in degree of definition and contrast between adjacent stands. This study examines the association between ecological contrast and spatial context of forest boundaries and the uncertainty associated with their spatial reliability — i.e., location and probability of true existence. In this study, the contrast between adjacent forest stands was quantified via an ecological similarity index (ESI). The attributes used to estimate the value of this index for each mapped boundary were species composition, density class, height class and age class. In addition, the context, or neighbourhood, of each boundary was quantified by using the contrast values and their locations to calculate a local autocorrelation index (local Moran’s I). The relationships among the context, the contrast and the existence probability (consistency) were explored using discriminant analysis. (Consistency was measured by overlaying three multi-temporal forest maps and analyzing the result.) It was found that the consistency was most closely related to the contrast between the forest types present on either side of a forest stand boundary. Context was found to have no relationship to stand boundary consistency.

Geostatistically estimation and mapping of forest stock in a natural unmanaged forest in the Caspian region of Iran

Estimation and mapping of forest resources are preconditions for management, planning and research. In this study, we applied kriging interpolation of geostatistics for estimation and mapping of forest stock at-tributes in a natural, uneven-aged, unmanaged forest in the Caspian region of northern Iran. The site of the study has an area of 516 ha and an elevation that ranges from 1100 to 1450 m ...

An Analytical Study on Boundaries of Administrative-defined Neighborhoods Using Residents’ Cognitive Maps (Case study: Mashhad Municipality Neighborhoods, Iran)

The neighborhood has had a long history in Iranian urbanization. Since urban plans wereintroduced by the authorities to shape urban development in Iran half a century ago, the concept of Iranian traditional neighborhood has been neglected gradually. The concept of neighborhood has not found the appropriate status in urban design and planning yet. One of the main reasons is that academics, profe...

The efficiency of sampling indices in estimating the spatial pattern of wooden species in central zagros forests (Kalkhani forest in Kouhdasht, Lorestan province, Iran)

It is so important to apply suitable methods to have a reliable estimation of the spatial distribution of trees. This research was aimed to determine and evaluate the spatial pattern of five species by distance- and density-based indices (Quercus brantii, Acer moncepesulanum, Crataegus aronia, Pistacia atlantica & Amygdalus lycioides) in the Kalkhani Forest in Koudasht Lorestan province, Iran. ...

Land use changes detection and spatial distribution using digital and satellite data, case study: Farim drainage basin, Northern of Iran

Land use change may influence many natural phenomena and ecological processes, including runoff, soil erosion, sedimentation and soil conditions. Decreasing of forest area in the North of Iran is one of the critical problems in recent years. The aims of this study are to detect land use changes between 1967 to 2002 using satellite images of Land Sat 7 ETM+ (2002), aerial photos and digital topo...

مدل‌سازی روابط توپولوژیک سه بعدی فازی در محیط GIS

Nowadays, geospatial information systems (GIS) are widely used to solve different spatial problems based on various types of fundamental data: spatial, temporal, attribute and topological relations. Topological relations are the most important part of GIS which distinguish it from the other kinds of information technologies. One of the important mechanisms for representing topological relations...
